EPIDURAL
STEROID INJECTIONS
What is an ESI?
An epidural steroid injection (ESI) is a steroid medication injected directly into the painful site. It is intended to relieve the pain and symptoms that often accompany bulging or herniated disks and/or irritated nerves. An ESI is a non-surgical treatment for pain. These injections can provide pain relief for a month or more.
What to Expect After the Injection?
You may return to regular activities immediately following your injection (driving, working, homemaking tasks, etc.).
Remember:
- Your epidural steroid injection will take 2-3 days to take effect.
- Low doses of steroid are generally not harmful or addictive.
-
The injection will not repair the disk bulge or herniation, but does help to relieve the pain and inflammation associated with these conditions.
- If you have any questions or concerns, please call our office and ask to speak with a medical assistant.
